Frequently asked questions about the Takahashi TOA-130NFB
What is the difference between the Takahashi TOA-130NS and the TOA-130NFB?
Both the TOA-130NS and the TOA-130NFB share the same ortho-apochromat ED triplet optical system — same aperture, same focal length, same glass. The difference is the focuser. The NS ships with a 2.7" rack-and-pinion focuser, which is well suited to visual use and lighter imaging setups. The NFB upgrades to a 4" dual-speed rack-and-pinion focuser with a 7:1 fine-focus ratio and a built-in 360° camera angle adjuster, making it the better choice for serious astrophotography — particularly with full-frame cameras, filter wheels, and other heavier accessories. Most imaging-oriented buyers choose the NFB.
Can the 4" focuser on the TOA-130NFB handle heavy imaging payloads?
Yes — the current 4" focuser on the TOA-130NFB is specifically designed to support demanding imaging configurations. Takahashi revised the focuser design to address concerns with earlier versions, and experienced owners consistently report that it holds position reliably with large-format cameras, filter wheels, and off-axis guiders. With approximately 274.5mm of available back focus, you have ample room to stack accessories. If you're planning an unusually heavy or complex train, contact Deep Space Products, and we can talk through your specific configuration.
What mount do I need for the Takahashi TOA-130NFB?
The TOA-130NFB OTA weighs approximately 22–27 lbs, depending on configuration. With a camera, guide system, and accessories, a realistic imaging payload of 15–20 lbs is typical. For unguided or long-exposure guided work, a mount with at least 30–40 lbs of rated payload provides an appropriate working margin. Third-party mounts from 10Micron are a perfect match with the TOA-130NFB. Deep Space Products can help you match a mount to your imaging goals and budget.
Does the TOA-130NFB work with full-frame cameras, and which flattener do I need?
Yes. The TOA-130NFB provides a 70mm fully illuminated imaging circle natively, and adding the optional 67-series field flattener extends that to a 90mm usable circle, which covers the 43mm diagonal of a full-frame 35mm sensor with room to spare. The flattener reduces the focal ratio slightly to f/7.68 and gives pinpoint stars across the full field. Takahashi also offers a focal reducer for a wider field at shorter exposures, and a 1.5x or 1.6x extender for additional magnification. Back-focus spacing is critical with any of these accessories; Deep Space Products can provide the correct spacing calculations for your specific camera.
How does the Takahashi TOA-130NFB compare to the Astro-Physics 130GTX?
Both are exceptional 130mm premium refractors with loyal followings, and direct comparisons on Cloudy Nights have found the optical performance to be remarkably close — experienced owners running both side by side report only subtle differences that depend heavily on seeing conditions and individual preference. The TOA-130NFB uses a dual FPL-53 ED air-spaced triplet; the AP 130GTX uses a different optical design with a faster focal ratio, which appeals to those who prioritize shorter exposure times. The Takahashi has a more extensive dedicated accessories ecosystem (flatteners, reducers, extenders with matched back-focus charts), while the AP is known for its Feathertouch focuser standard. Availability also differs — the Astro-Physics frequently has wait times, while the TOA-130NFB is generally available through authorized dealers. Both are long-term investments that hold value well.
Do tube rings and a hard case come with the TOA-130NFB?
No — the TOA-130NFB ships as an optical tube assembly only. Tube rings or a tube holder, a hard transport case, and a finderscope are all sold separately. For the 155mm OD tube, Takahashi's own Cradle 156S (TKA31420) is a popular option; third-party split rings also work well for non-Takahashi mounts. It's worth budgeting for these accessories alongside the OTA, as they're necessary for a complete imaging system. Deep Space Products can help you identify the right combination.
Does Deep Space Products service or support Takahashi telescopes?
Deep Space Products is an authorized Takahashi dealer with the technical experience to advise on system configuration, accessory selection, and back-focus calculations. For warranty or repair service, Takahashi America (the U.S. distributor) handles service directly; DSP can help connect you with the appropriate support channel. Our team uses and integrates Takahashi optics and can provide hands-on guidance that goes well beyond what you'd get from a general-purpose retailer.
Can I host the TOA-130NFB at DSP Remote?
Yes — the TOA-130NFB is well suited for a permanent hosted setup at DSP Remote, Deep Space Products' Bortle 1 telescope hosting facility in southwest New Mexico. In fact, it is one of the most popular scopes in use. The refractor's sealed optical design, consistent performance, and long-term stability make it an excellent candidate for unattended remote imaging under dark skies. Learn more about DSP Remote or contact us to discuss hosting options for your system.
